This month, we’re spotlighting Bob, our Senior Project Manager. Read on to learn more about what motivated Bob to join our team, what an ideal day off looks like, and where in the world he’d like to visit most.
Describe your experience before joining the Emergent Software team
I have been a project manager, scrum master, and delivery lead for almost 20 years; with a majority of that time working in software/product development. I have worked with hundreds of people and dozens of different teams on software development projects, and I enjoy the process of building and working with others on a team and getting things done!
It does not happen all the time, but if you have ever been part of a great team, it’s something you remember and look back on for a very long time.
About 15 years ago, I decided to get my Scrum Master certification, and 5-6 years ago, I got my Product Owner certification. I love everything that contributes to getting work completed faster and providing value (through methods like Agile, Kanban, and DevOps), so the team can address feedback and constantly adapt to change. There’s a quote I enjoy by Rupert Murdoch that I enjoy and sums up the work I do well:
“The world is changing very fast. Big will not beat small anymore. It will be the fast beating the slow.”
Everything is constantly changing, and I am a firm believer that everyone in this industry has to “sharpen the axe” and be open to new things or get left behind. I am passionate about technology and business and try to stay current by listening to podcasts, reading newsletters, blogs, etc. In the past few years, I have read (read and listened to) 40+ books on business practices, Lean, Agile, product ownership, Dev-Ops, Scaled Agile, SDLC, leadership, teamwork, etc. I used to do most of my listening during my commutes. Now, during the pandemic, I mostly do it while washing dishes.
What drew you to join Emergent Software?
During the interview process, I learned that Emergent Software focuses on becoming a long-term partner dedicated to the success of their clients, compared to other companies that might just build a product/application and hand it off to another vendor for maintenance.
This approach aligned perfectly with my views regarding continuous development, ongoing improvements, adapting to clients’ needs, and consistently providing value to our clients and the end-users.
Additionally, I liked the idea of working for a small company where if I noticed something that needed to be changed or improved, I could roll up my sleeves and work with the rest of the team to get this issue addressed. At large companies, almost everything needs a committee, executive sign-off, etc. and people are not empowered to do what they feel is right for the client. Here, I feel like I can truly make a difference in the lives of our clients.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
Hockey, hockey, and more hockey – I have three daughters who play hockey, my wife is a goalie, and I coach a AAA team that I started with a couple of other coaches last year. All three of my daughters played on boys’ teams growing up, and they now play on JV, high school varsity and at the University of St. Thomas.
What does your ideal day off look like?
Hockey, hockey, and more hockey! My ideal day off is very close to Hockey Day in Minnesota, which would include watching each of my daughters playing a game, and then sitting back in the evening and watching a Wild game on TV.
Where in the world would you most like to visit that you have never been to?
Well, there is a large island, on a large lake, on a large island, on Lake Superior, so someday I would like to make that trek to the island--just so I can say I have been on the largest island, on the largest lake, on the largest island (Isle Royale), on the largest lake in the world. Based on what I know about this island, more people have been to Everest than have visited this island in the middle of nowhere!
What is your biggest motivator?
My family is, of course, my biggest motivator--they all need nourishment, a place to sleep, and a place to hang out in between school, sleeping, and hockey. Honestly, my dad instilled in me great respect for working hard, getting things done, and being on time, so that guidance and mentoring have been with me a very long time and motivates me every day.
Thanks for sharing your story with us and for being a wonderful addition to our team, Bob! We’re so lucky to have you. Stay tuned for future spotlights of the great people who make up Emergent Software!
