The Solution

The engagement began with an architectural reset. Emergent developed a roadmap to break apart the existing monolith and rebuild the platform as a collection of microservices, starting with scheduling. To improve scalability and performance, Emergent replaced direct database connections with clean APIs and rebuilt the scheduling experience using a modern ADA-compliant UI. This enhanced accessibility for all users while reducing technical risk and improving responsiveness.
From the start, the engagement focused not just on writing code but on embedding better engineering practices across the organization. Emergent partnered with engineering and product leaders to coach interdependent teams on adopting Agile delivery in a more flexible, outcome-oriented way. The team quickly built a proof-of-concept AI agent—internally referred to as the “Daily Huddle”—that automated daily staff prep tasks and helped resolve more than 600 items in a matter of weeks. This prototype was powered by Azure AI Foundry and demonstrated a tangible way to apply generative AI to day-to-day business challenges.
Throughout the engagement, Emergent also helped the business unlock Microsoft funding to support modernization initiatives by leveraging its Microsoft partner status and deep knowledge of the Cloud Adoption Framework. The client gained both a strategic plan and the financial support needed to execute it.
The Impact
In just 18 months, Emergent Software helped the client reduce what had originally been projected as an eight-year modernization roadmap to less than two. More than 1,800 work items were completed across the platform, and over 890 bugs were resolved. Beyond numbers, the company regained its ability to deliver features customers had been requesting for years—many of which had been stuck in backlog due to technical complexity or team bandwidth.
The rebuilt scheduling system not only met accessibility standards but dramatically improved usability. What was once considered one of the platform’s weakest areas became a competitive advantage. Platform performance improved across the board, reducing complaints from customers and support burden on internal teams.

With Microsoft Fabric and Azure AI now part of their toolkit, the client had a blueprint for incorporating intelligent services into their long-term roadmap.
