The Opportunity

A medical device company relies on dependable technology systems to support internal operations, product development, and regulatory requirements. As an organization operating in a highly regulated industry, it depends on secure, scalable infrastructure to maintain compliance while continuing to innovate and bring new therapies to market.

The company initially engaged Emergent Software as both a trusted advisor and Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider (CSP). Our partnership led to Emergent performing a digital estate discovery assessment designed to provide greater visibility into the company’s technology environment and cloud readiness.

The assessment helped the company better understand their infrastructure and identify opportunities to strengthen their cloud strategy. One area the team wanted to review more closely was their disaster recovery (DR) environment in Microsoft Azure.

Although the company had already implemented a warm disaster recovery environment, leadership wanted to ensure the architecture and operational procedures were ready to support recovery during a real disruption. A disaster recovery strategy must be tested to confirm that systems, applications, and networking configurations function correctly when failover occurs.

The company partnered with Emergent to review the existing architecture, confirm system dependencies, and simulate recovery scenarios. The goal was to ensure the organization had a reliable recovery process, documented procedures, and clear operational understanding of how systems would behave during an outage.

Because the disaster recovery environment had been established before Emergent’s involvement, the project required quickly developing a clear picture of the existing infrastructure. Understanding the current architecture, networking configurations, and application dependencies was essential before conducting recovery simulations.

Emergent worked closely with the company to analyze the environment and ensure the organization’s disaster recovery strategy was fully understood and operationally ready.

The Solution

Emergent Software performed a comprehensive review of the company’s disaster recovery architecture in Azure to evaluate the environment and confirm that recovery procedures could be executed successfully.

The engagement began with a technical and logical review of the existing infrastructure. Emergent analyzed server dependencies, DNS configurations, networking requirements, and IP compatibility to identify components that could affect recovery operations.

The team also reviewed IP whitelisting rules, bandwidth capacity, and physical infrastructure considerations to ensure systems could communicate correctly in a failover scenario. Because Emergent serves as the company’s Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider, the team was able to use their visibility into the organization’s environment to accelerate the discovery process.

Once the architecture was fully understood, Emergent conducted structured disaster recovery simulations to validate the recovery process.

Failover testing was executed inside a controlled “bubble network” environment in Azure. This approach allowed the team to simulate outage scenarios without impacting production systems. Running these tests provided a safe way to observe how applications, services, and network configurations responded during failover.

The simulations also helped the team identify system dependencies and measure how different components behaved during recovery. These insights allowed the teams to confirm that applications could transition successfully to the recovery environment.

Throughout the project, Emergent and the client collaborated through regular Microsoft Teams meetings, technical working sessions, and shadowing activities. This close coordination ensured the internal IT team understood both the disaster recovery architecture and the procedures required to initiate failover.

Emergent also developed detailed runbook documentation outlining the steps required to execute disaster recovery procedures. These runbooks provide clear guidance for initiating failover and restoring services during an outage.

By combining architectural review, controlled testing, and operational documentation, Emergent helped the organization move from a theoretical disaster recovery plan to a validated recovery process.

The Impact

The engagement provided the client with a clearer understanding of their disaster recovery environment and the procedures required to restore services during a disruption.

Through the simulated failover exercises, the team confirmed that systems could transition to the Azure recovery environment without interrupting critical operations. Observing system behavior during testing also provided insight into how applications and infrastructure components interact during recovery scenarios.

Another key outcome was the creation of detailed disaster recovery runbooks. These documents provide structured instructions for executing failover procedures and ensure recovery steps are clearly documented for the IT team.

Documented and tested recovery procedures also support regulatory, compliance, and insurance requirements by demonstrating that the organization maintains an operational disaster recovery capability.

The project strengthened the organization’s ability to rely on replicated systems and standby data in Azure. With recovery processes validated and documented, the company is better prepared to respond to unexpected outages while maintaining access to essential systems.

The engagement also expanded the relationship between the company and Emergent Software. Emergent continues to serve as the company’s Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider and is currently discussing additional initiatives including Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Purview, and a Copilot Quickstart engagement.

By reviewing and validating their Azure disaster recovery environment, the company strengthened the reliability of its technology infrastructure and established a more resilient foundation for future growth.
