The Opportunity
A construction and mining equipment manufacturer’s IT Cybersecurity team is responsible for monitoring employee security training completion, phishing simulation results, and broader security awareness metrics. The team had already established reporting dashboards using Power BI, supported by data exports from systems such as SAP Employee Central and KnowBe4. Preparing this data involved structured Excel-based workflows that helped transform and organize information before publishing insights to stakeholders.
As the cybersecurity program continued to mature, the client identified an opportunity to modernize the reporting pipeline behind these dashboards. Automating data ingestion and transformation would streamline reporting preparation, improve data freshness, and provide greater transparency into how metrics were generated. A more structured architecture would also allow stakeholders across the organization to access timely insights and respond more quickly to emerging trends.
Leadership also wanted clearer, more immediate visibility into cybersecurity awareness performance across teams. Managers needed intuitive dashboards that highlighted training completion, phishing simulation outcomes, and overall progress in a format that supported accountability and continuous improvement.
To support these goals, the company engaged Emergent Software to modernize both the reporting experience and the underlying data platform. The objective was not simply to refresh a dashboard, but to redesign the ingestion, storage, transformation, and visualization layers to create a scalable, reliable, and secure reporting environment.
The Solution
Emergent Software approached the engagement as both a cybersecurity reporting modernization initiative and an Azure data platform transformation. Rather than layering improvements on top of the existing Excel process, the team designed a structured, phased solution that replaced manual workflows with automated data pipelines and a centralized SQL data store.
The first phase focused on migrating data processing away from Excel and into a managed Azure environment. Data from SAP Employee Central and KnowBe4 was ingested into Azure using PowerShell and Azure Data Factory. Azure Key Vault was implemented to ensure secure credential management and controlled system access. Instead of manually transforming files in spreadsheets, data was staged, persisted, and structured within SQL using clearly defined schemas.
Emergent introduced a layered architecture to support long-term scalability. Raw data was staged separately from persisted and reporting-ready data. This separation improved data integrity and created transparency in how metrics were derived. By structuring the reporting layer using a star schema model, the team ensured that Power BI dashboards could deliver consistent and performant visualizations without relying on fragile transformations.
Power BI functionality was also enhanced. Reporting logic was refined to surface the most recent data first, display accurate reporting hierarchies based on employee structure rather than alphabetical sorting, and highlight both employees who failed phishing tests and those who successfully completed them. These changes improved clarity and reinforced positive behavior rather than focusing solely on noncompliance.
In addition to improving data structure, Emergent implemented Dev, Test, and Production deployment patterns to support governance and change management. Automated pipelines were configured with built-in retry policies, error handling, and alerting. This eliminated the need for manual reprocessing when issues occurred and reduced operational risk.
The end result was a fully modernized cybersecurity awareness dashboard backed by a secure, automated Azure data platform. The cybersecurity team no longer relied on monthly Excel workbooks. Instead, they had a structured pipeline capable of delivering timely, reliable insights.
The Impact
The transformation delivered measurable operational and strategic value.
From an operational standpoint, the most immediate benefit was the elimination of manual Excel-based processing. Monthly reporting work that previously required hands-on effort was replaced with automated ingestion and transformation pipelines. This freed the cybersecurity team to focus on higher-value initiatives rather than data wrangling.
Data freshness and trust improved significantly. Because ingestion and transformation were automated and structured within SQL, stakeholders gained greater confidence in the accuracy and consistency of reported metrics. The dashboard now reflects near real-time data rather than static monthly snapshots.
The reporting improvements also enhanced accountability across the organization. Managers gained clearer visibility into team-level training completion and phishing simulation outcomes. By displaying accurate reporting hierarchies and more intuitive metrics, the dashboard shifted responsibility from the cybersecurity team to individual leaders, reinforcing shared ownership of security awareness.
Technically, the organization now operates on a scalable Azure-based architecture capable of expanding to additional data sources in the future. The structured schema, automated pipelines, and managed identity approach reduce key-person dependency and improve long-term maintainability. Secure credential management through Key Vault and defined Dev/Test/Prod patterns strengthen governance and operational resilience.
The improved user experience has also increased adoption. The modernized Power BI dashboard delivers a more app-like experience, making insights easier to interpret and act upon. Instead of being viewed as a compliance report, the dashboard now functions as an operational tool for driving cybersecurity awareness across the organization.
Beyond the technical implementation, the engagement established a foundation for continued collaboration. With a modern data platform in place, the organization is positioned to extend reporting capabilities, integrate additional security metrics, and further mature its cybersecurity awareness program.
By pairing cybersecurity reporting modernization with Azure data platform transformation, Emergent Software helped the client move from manual, Excel-driven reporting to an automated, scalable, and trusted analytics environment that supports stronger security governance and organizational accountability.
