Azure Migration Enables Full Data Center Exit and Cloud Modernization

A law firm set out to completely exit its physical data center and migrate its entire technology footprint to Microsoft Azure. Cutover planning was especially rigorous. Emergent helped the firm design rollback protocols and validation checklists for each migration event, ensuring that any failed cutover could be reversed quickly and without user impact. This preparation paid off during one of the major migration milestones: when an unexpected issue caused a cutover to stall, the rollback plan was immediately activated. The legacy system was restored in minutes, with zero disruption to users or loss of data. Just days later, with the issue resolved, the team re-executed the cutover successfully. The experience validated both the architecture and the resilience of the migration strategy, while reinforcing the trust between Emergent and the firm’s internal team.

As the migration progressed, Emergent’s role evolved from direct implementation to architectural oversight and coaching. To support long-term operations and reduce reliance on manual processes, Emergent introduced several Azure-native services. Azure Backup and Site Recovery were configured to provide automated recovery capabilities and ensure business continuity. Azure Monitor and Log Analytics gave the IT team visibility into system health, performance, and cost trends. Azure Cost Management dashboards were also set up to help track and optimize cloud spending over time. These tools helped the team move from a reactive, infrastructure-heavy model to a more strategic and proactive approach to IT operations.

The firm completed a 99% migration to Microsoft Azure, retiring its physical data center ahead of the contract expiration and avoiding the substantial costs that would have come with renewal. The migration encompassed over 80 production systems and critical services, many of which supported day-to-day legal workflows across practice areas and geographies. Offices remained fully operational throughout the process, with users experiencing no disruption to legal work, file access, or communications. Every cutover was executed with confidence, backed by clear runbooks, live support, and rollback procedures.

The elimination of physical infrastructure significantly reduced operational overhead for the internal IT team. With no more legacy servers to maintain or data center environments to patch and monitor, the team was able to shift focus toward higher-value tasks—supporting user experience, security, and strategic initiatives.

Perhaps most notably, the internal team emerged from the engagement with full ownership of the Azure environment. Empowered by Emergent’s enablement-first approach, they now maintain, monitor, and evolve the cloud infrastructure independently. This includes spinning up new services, responding to system changes, managing costs, and scaling as needed to meet business growth.
