The Opportunity
A large, nationally recognized law firm engaged Emergent Software to modernize its backup and disaster recovery strategy as part of a broader transition away from its existing data center environment. As the organization evaluated its long-term infrastructure roadmap, leadership identified an opportunity to improve resilience, strengthen data protection, and align its approach with a cloud-first strategy.
At the time, the organization relied on a combination of on-premises backup and replication tools to protect its workloads. While these systems had supported the business effectively, they were designed for a traditional infrastructure model and required ongoing hardware investment and maintenance. With an upcoming hardware refresh and potential co-location investment on the horizon, the organization sought a more scalable and cost-effective alternative.
In addition to cost considerations, there was a growing need to enhance disaster recovery capabilities. Leadership wanted to ensure that critical systems could be replicated and recovered reliably in the event of an outage, while also simplifying how backups were managed across the environment. Establishing a cloud-based approach to backup and disaster recovery offered a path to achieve both goals.
The organization engaged Emergent Software to design and implement a solution that would transition backups to Azure, enable disaster recovery replication, and provide a secure, resilient foundation for future cloud adoption.
The Solution
Emergent Software implemented a cloud-based backup and disaster recovery solution built on Microsoft Azure, enabling secure replication of on-premises workloads and improving overall resilience.
The engagement began with a comprehensive digital estate review to assess the organization’s existing backup and replication processes. This discovery phase informed the design of a solution aligned to both current requirements and long-term cloud strategy, ensuring that the approach would support future migration efforts as well as immediate disaster recovery needs.
To modernize backup capabilities, Emergent deployed Microsoft Azure Backup using Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS). This allowed the organization to securely back up on-premises workloads directly to Azure, eliminating reliance on physical backup infrastructure while improving scalability and manageability.
For disaster recovery, Emergent implemented Azure Site Recovery (ASR) to replicate server workloads from the on-premises environment to Azure. This configuration enables continuous replication and provides the ability to fail over workloads to Azure in the event of a disruption. By leveraging Azure as a recovery site, the organization gained a geographically resilient solution without the need to maintain a secondary data center.
A critical component of the engagement was validation. Emergent conducted backup restore testing to confirm that data could be recovered as expected, along with disaster recovery “bubble testing” to simulate failover scenarios in a controlled environment. These tests ensured that both backup and replication processes were functioning correctly and that the organization could confidently rely on the solution in real-world conditions.
Throughout implementation, Emergent followed Microsoft best practices to deliver a secure and well-architected solution. The design aligned closely with the organization’s broader Azure strategy, creating a foundation that not only addressed immediate backup and disaster recovery needs but also supported future cloud migration initiatives.
The Impact
The organization now operates with a modern, cloud-based backup and disaster recovery solution that significantly improves resilience and simplifies data protection.
One of the most important outcomes is the ability to securely replicate and recover workloads in Azure. With Azure Site Recovery in place, the organization can confidently fail over critical systems in the event of an outage, ensuring business continuity without reliance on a secondary physical location.
Backup capabilities have also been strengthened. By leveraging Azure Backup, the organization has moved away from hardware-dependent solutions to a scalable, cloud-based model. This shift reduces operational overhead while providing greater flexibility in how backups are managed and retained.
Validation testing played a key role in building confidence in the solution. Through successful backup restore and disaster recovery testing, the organization confirmed that its systems could be recovered as designed. This assurance is critical for both internal stakeholders and business continuity planning.
The solution also supports the organization’s broader cloud strategy. By establishing Azure as both a backup and disaster recovery platform, the organization created a natural pathway for future workload migration. In fact, the replication capabilities implemented through Azure Site Recovery have already been leveraged to support the transition of workloads into Azure, accelerating overall cloud adoption.
Beyond technical improvements, the engagement has strengthened the organization’s ability to manage risk. With a reliable and tested disaster recovery solution in place, leadership has greater confidence in the organization’s ability to respond to disruptions and protect critical data.
Today, the organization benefits from a secure, scalable backup and disaster recovery framework aligned to its long-term cloud strategy. The engagement demonstrates how Azure-based replication and backup solutions can replace traditional infrastructure, reduce complexity, and provide a resilient foundation for future growth.
