The Opportunity
A financial services organization engaged Emergent Software to strengthen its security posture while modernizing its technology environment. Operating in a highly regulated industry, the organization faced increasing pressure to meet evolving compliance requirements, protect sensitive data, and ensure reliable access to systems for both employees and customers.
Prior to the engagement, the organization’s environment was primarily on-premises, supported by a mix of established systems and long-standing infrastructure. While these systems had effectively supported the business, evolving security, availability, and compliance requirements created an opportunity to modernize and standardize the environment.
As the organization continued to grow, ensuring consistent application of security controls and maintaining visibility across systems became increasingly important. At the same time, rising audit and compliance expectations placed additional pressure on internal teams to strengthen controls, improve access management, and demonstrate readiness.
The organization also recognized an opportunity to simplify its technology landscape. Over time, a variety of tools and platforms had been introduced to support different needs, creating complexity for both users and IT teams. A more unified, cloud-based approach offered the potential to streamline operations while improving overall security and manageability.
With limited internal IT resources and increasing demands on security and compliance, leadership sought a partner who could provide both strategic guidance and ongoing support. Emergent Software was engaged to deliver a Microsoft Cloud Security–focused approach, supported by managed services, to establish a secure, scalable foundation and enable continuous improvement over time.
The Solution
Emergent Software delivered a security-focused transformation built on Microsoft Cloud Security capabilities, combining infrastructure modernization with a long-term managed services model.
The engagement began with a structured discovery process, including site visits and a formal assessment to understand the organization’s infrastructure, dependencies, and security risks. Based on these findings, Emergent developed a phased roadmap aligned to Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework, prioritizing unsupported hardware, identity systems, and critical infrastructure components.
A core focus of the solution was modernizing identity and access management. Emergent implemented multi-factor authentication using Microsoft Authenticator and introduced Conditional Access policies to enforce secure access based on user identity, device posture, and contextual risk. This approach aligned with Zero Trust principles, ensuring that access to systems is continuously validated rather than assumed.
To strengthen visibility and threat detection, Emergent deployed Microsoft Sentinel as a centralized security information and event management (SIEM) platform. Sentinel aggregates signals across identity, endpoints, and cloud infrastructure, providing a unified view of the organization’s security posture. This enables more efficient monitoring, investigation, and response to potential security events.
Additional security enhancements included endpoint protection and monitoring, secure email controls through Mimecast, and integration with managed detection and response (MDR) services. Together, these capabilities created a layered security model designed to reduce risk and improve response readiness.
In parallel, the organization’s infrastructure was transitioned to Microsoft Azure using Azure Migrate and a structured landing zone design. On-premises systems were migrated and modernized, including file services through Azure Files, virtual desktops through Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), and communication systems through Microsoft Teams Voice. Legacy systems such as Skype for Business and on-premises servers were decommissioned as part of this process.
Backup and recovery capabilities were also enhanced using cloud-based solutions, including immutable backup strategies and improved business continuity planning. These changes provided stronger data protection and aligned the organization with modern compliance expectations.
Throughout the engagement, Emergent worked closely with the organization through on-site collaboration, remote support, and regular working sessions. As the environment evolved, the relationship transitioned into a managed services model, with Emergent providing ongoing monitoring, patching, security policy refinement, and advisory support to address emerging risks.
The Impact
The organization’s security posture has significantly improved, supported by a more unified and proactive approach to Microsoft Cloud Security.
One of the most meaningful outcomes is the shift from reactive to proactive security management. With Microsoft Sentinel providing centralized visibility across systems, the organization is better equipped to detect, investigate, and respond to potential threats. This improved visibility has reduced reliance on manual processes and strengthened overall response readiness.
Identity security has been significantly enhanced. The implementation of multi-factor authentication and Conditional Access policies ensures that user access is protected by modern security controls, reducing the risk of unauthorized access while maintaining a seamless user experience.
The organization has also seen measurable improvements in its Microsoft Secure Score, reflecting stronger alignment with security best practices. Security policies are now consistently applied across systems, and ongoing monitoring ensures that the environment remains aligned with evolving standards.
Operationally, the environment is more stable and efficient. Incident volumes have decreased, patching is now standardized and consistently maintained, and internal teams benefit from a clear and repeatable support model. The simplification of infrastructure, including updated network components and removal of legacy systems, has reduced complexity and improved day-to-day management.
From a compliance perspective, the organization is now better positioned to meet audit and regulatory requirements. Leveraging Microsoft’s Trust Center, improved backup strategies, and standardized controls, internal teams can respond to audits and cyber insurance requirements with greater confidence.
The engagement has also enabled new capabilities that were not previously possible. The organization can now scale infrastructure based on demand, support a modern Teams-based phone system, and maintain stronger business continuity through enhanced backup and recovery options.
Most importantly, security is now managed as an ongoing capability rather than a one-time initiative. Through continuous monitoring, policy refinement, and managed services support, the organization is able to adapt to evolving threats while maintaining a strong security foundation.
Today, the organization operates on a secure, cloud-based platform supported by modern identity controls, centralized monitoring, and long-term partnership with Emergent Software. This approach demonstrates how Microsoft Cloud Security, combined with ongoing managed services, can strengthen protection, simplify operations, and support long-term resilience.
