A financial institution providing consumer banking, lending, and mortgage services must ensure that its core systems, particularly its database environment, meet strict standards for security, performance, and compliance.

As part of its ongoing technology management, the organization relied on a SQL Server 2016 environment hosted in a private cloud. While the system continued to support daily operations, the approaching end of support for SQL Server 2016 introduced new considerations around long-term supportability and regulatory compliance. With a formal audit on the horizon, the bank identified an opportunity to take a more proactive approach to managing its database environment.

Rather than focusing solely on maintaining existing systems, the organization sought a clearer understanding of the overall health of its SQL Server platform. This included evaluating version lifecycle considerations, backup and recovery readiness, performance characteristics, and alignment with current security best practices. The objective was to evaluate the current state of the environment, identify opportunities for improvement, and establish a clear path toward a modern, secure, and maintainable database platform.

Emergent Software began the engagement with a comprehensive SQL Server Health Assessment focused on evaluating the bank’s database environment across key areas including supportability, performance, security, and operational readiness. This assessment provided a structured view of the current environment and helped identify opportunities to strengthen the platform. 

A key component of the assessment was reviewing the SQL Server version lifecycle and confirming that the existing SQL Server 2016 deployment was approaching end of support. Emergent also evaluated backup configurations, database readiness, and overall system alignment with best practices expected within a regulated financial environment. These insights helped establish a clear understanding of where improvements would have the greatest impact.

To support future planning, Emergent leveraged Azure migration assessment capabilities within Azure Data Studio to analyze compatibility and modernization readiness. This provided visibility into how the existing databases would perform in an upgraded environment and informed the strategy for transitioning to a newer SQL Server version.

Based on the findings, Emergent provided recommendations focused on improving the overall health and supportability of the database platform. These recommendations included upgrading to a supported SQL Server version, modernizing the underlying infrastructure, and enhancing backup and recovery strategies to align with current operational and compliance requirements.

Following the assessment, Emergent partnered with the bank to implement these improvements through a structured modernization effort. The database platform was upgraded to SQL Server 2022 and deployed on Microsoft Azure using an Infrastructure-as-a-Service model. This approach allowed the organization to retain familiarity with SQL Server while benefiting from improved scalability and flexibility.

The implementation was executed using a phased, risk-aware approach. This included validated backups, a proof-of-concept migration, and data replication between environments prior to final cutover. These steps ensured continuity and minimized disruption to business operations during the transition.

Emergent also addressed database optimization and configuration updates as part of the modernization effort, ensuring that the upgraded environment performed reliably and efficiently post-migration. Throughout the process, close collaboration with the bank’s internal team ensured alignment and knowledge transfer, enabling the organization to confidently manage its database environment moving forward.

By addressing key findings from the assessment, the organization successfully transitioned to a fully supported SQL Server platform. This significantly improved alignment with current security and compliance requirements and reduced the risk associated with operating on unsupported software ahead of its regulatory audit.

The upgraded SQL Server 2022 environment also delivered improvements in performance and reliability. The modernized platform supports consistent database operations, with no reported issues following the transition, reinforcing confidence in both the upgrade and the underlying architecture.

From a database administration perspective, the organization now operates on a more maintainable and scalable platform. Enhanced backup configurations and improved infrastructure provide stronger data protection and operational resilience, while the Azure-based deployment offers greater flexibility in managing resources over time.

The engagement also enabled a more proactive approach to database management. With a clearer understanding of system health and improved alignment with best practices, the bank’s team is better positioned to monitor, maintain, and evolve its database environment as business needs change.

Beyond the immediate improvements, the project established a strong foundation for future modernization efforts. The success of the engagement has led to continued collaboration between the bank and Emergent Software, including additional cloud initiatives and broader infrastructure planning.
